Our School, Our Pride: The Historic Ellsworth High School Gym
Today, we kick off the "Our School, Our Pride" series with a feature that’s close to the heart of every Ellsworth Lancer – the Ellsworth High School Gym. This isn't just any gym; it's a piece of Michigan's history and a cornerstone of our community's spirit.
Built in 1957 as part of a $195,000 bond proposal, the gymnasium was officially dedicated on November 4, 1957, marking the beginning of its journey as a community landmark. What makes our gym floor stand out is its unique maple "short-board" design, comprising thousands of one-foot-long pieces of maple. This floor isn’t just for sports; it's a mosaic of memories, echoing with the footsteps of generations.
The first basketball game played on this floor was on November 26, 1957, and since then, the gym has witnessed countless games. However, its role extends beyond sports. The attached stage has seen everything from theatrical plays to band concerts, graduations, and community gatherings. Each event has added to the rich tapestry of our school's history.
As we look towards the future, we also honor our past. The original gym floor, with its distinctive pattern, stands as a testament to our commitment to preserving our heritage. In 2020, we undertook a major construction project to repair and replace the north wall of the gym. This significant upgrade, involving a new foundation and exterior siding, was not just a repair but a pledge to maintain the gym in top condition for future generations. This commitment is mirrored in the great care and respect with which our staff and students treat this historic floor. It's a balance between respecting tradition and embracing progress, ensuring that this legacy continues to inspire future generations.
