Here's what's happening in MS this week!

ENGLISH

6th Grade: Students have now completed both the Reading and Language NWEA tests. We will set winter goal scores for both this week. We will begin our read-aloud of The Graveyard Book on Monday. We will study the book as a mentor text as we learn about sentence structure, sensory and figurative language, vocabulary, plot arcs, character development, theme, and more. Reading Logs are due on Friday; students should be reading every night for 15+ minutes and recording their progress in their class notebooks.

7th Grade: Students have now completed both the Reading and Language NWEA tests. We will set winter goal scores for both this week. We will continue learning about sentence structure in the form of phrases and clauses with a quiz on Thursday. We will also complete pre-reading activities for our first class text, Touching Spirit Bear. Reading Logs are due on Friday; students should be reading every night for 15+ minutes and recording their progress in their class notebooks.

8th Grade: Every Monday your student will receive an “Article of the Week.” The articles are due on Thursday each week. Your student will also have a weekly spelling assignment. Be on the lookout for those as well. We are currently working on the “My Personal Michigan Hero” essay and we are discussing the attributes of a hero.

SOCIAL STUDIES

6th Grade: We are going to be exploring how physical conditions differ in the world. We will be learning how different latitudes have different temperature and precipitation patterns. We will also be exploring how physical conditions change as elevation changes.

8th Grade: This week we studied the midnight ride of Paul Revere and found out that television, songs and poems had it wrong. We also examined the events of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the first battle of the Revolution. Students took a pop quiz today on Google classroom and worked on their projects, which are due next week. The unit test will be on Thursday. Students will receive a study guide on Wednesday. They may use their notebooks on the test free of charge but earn extra credit points if they do not.

MATH

6th Grade: This week we will have a quiz on Tuesday over sections 1.1-1.2 in our book. We have a worksheet packet due Monday. We have been learning about integers and different ways we can compare them using number lines. All students have an IXL online account for practice from a phone, ipod or anywhere there is internet.

7th Grade: This week we will have a quiz on Tuesday over sections 1.1-1.3 in our book. We have a worksheet packet due Monday. We have been learning how to add and subtract integers. All students have an IXL online account for practice from a phone, ipod or anywhere there is internet.

8th Grade: 8th grade had two quizzes last week Students are allowed to retake if they have all homework turned in. They can make arrangements with me to retake. Please check power school for updated grades. We will review Monday and have a chapter test on Tuesday. All students have an IXL online account for practice from a phone, ipod or anywhere there is internet.

SCIENCE

6th Grade: We will be wrapping up our science observation skills early in the week before we move on to our study of Ecosystems.

7th Grade: We completed our scientific investigation unit on Tuesday with a quiz. Students can do quiz retakes to improve their grade. We started our waves and energy, using slinkies to investigate the different types of waves.

8th Grade: We have been discussing different types of clouds and what type of weather they indicate. We will be continuing our study of weather by exploring different weather patterns.
