Ellsworth Community School Hosts On-Site Dental Clinic to Support Student Health
Ellsworth, MI — Ellsworth Community School (ECS) recently hosted an on-site dental clinic that provided preventive and early-intervention dental care for students, reinforcing the district’s commitment to student wellness and access to essential health services.
The clinic was organized and coordinated by ECS School Nurse Mrs. Jamie Klooster in partnership with the Health Department of Northwest Michigan. This collaboration made it possible for students to receive care during the school day—services that would not be feasible for the district to offer independently.
During the clinic, 22 students were seen and received a range of preventive and early-intervention dental services. Thirteen students received dental sealants, with a total of 67 sealants placed on molars to help prevent future cavities. In addition, 10 students received Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) treatment, with 20 decayed teeth treated to help stop the progression of decay until follow-up care can be provided.
Perhaps most importantly, the clinic helped identify students in need of additional care. Three students requiring urgent dental attention and seven students needing non-urgent care were referred to a dental home for continued treatment. For families without dental insurance, assistance was offered to help connect them with appropriate follow-up services. Several students were also referred to dental providers who specialize in working with patients with sensory disorders, ensuring care that meets their individual needs.
“Having a full-time school nurse has been an invaluable service for our students and families,” said Aaron Gaffney, Superintendent of Ellsworth Community School. “Mrs. Klooster’s leadership and coordination of this clinic helped remove barriers to care and made a meaningful difference for students who needed it most.”
“This partnership with the Health Department of Northwest Michigan allows us to provide critical health services that would not otherwise be possible,” Gaffney added. “We are incredibly grateful for their continued support of our school community.”
Ellsworth Community School extends its sincere thanks to Mrs. Klooster and the Health Department of Northwest Michigan for their dedication to student health and well-being.
